 BUILD YOUR OWN SITE

Tutorials

Some internet service providers (ISPs) offer free web space - hosting - and complete publishing tools with easy tutorials. These packages are very useful for beginners, providing templates, so all you have to do is change the text and images. Some include additional features allowing you to customise the appearance of your site. They all include web space, an easy upload facility, plus e-mail and links facilities.

Netscape Composer
www.netscapeonline.co.uk/webspace
Composer is a complete package offering 20Mb of web space with a full tutorial in seven steps to publish your site on NetscapeOnline. You can choose from templates or create your own style using your own personal artwork for a logo, navigation bar, buttons, and background. You can also add sound. If you are a more advanced builder, you can insert HTML form tags, JavaScript and plug-in code not available from the standard menu. Composer also allows you to insert metatags, so search engines will find your site.

Microsoft Network
msn.co.uk/hmc
Microsoft allows you to build a simple area in its communities section, where you can restrict access to your site to MSN members only. It's not really a homepage, but a space to upload images, store and share files, and create your own messageboard and calendar. Useful for small clubs or enthusiasts who want to share a passion.

AOL
www.aol.co.uk
AOL members using 1-2-3 Publish can have 50Mb of web space and a straightforward three-step building process using themed templates, such as 'Our Wedding'. You have to be a member.

LineOne
www.lineone.com
Another building tool based on fixed templates giving you up to 10Mb of web space. Again it's a case of customising the template using your own images, changing text, and adding your own links.

Yahoo! Geocities
geocities.yahoo.com
One of the first to offer free web space, this has a PageBuilder tool as well as page templates and HTML tutorials for the beginner.

TRIPOD
http://www.tripod.co.uk
Again, offers simple templates, HTML tips, a web design guide and free parking.
