To search by keyword
 
All sites in the database have been indexed using keywords. These include significant names and locations, specific dates and other important information. You can search for keywords, but do not use sentences or punctuation. To search by more than one keyword, separate the words with a space and choose one of the following options.
 
Find sites including any given word
 
This will find all records that contain any of your listed keywords. For example, choosing this option with the keywords 'Ian' and 'Wright' will find all records that contain 'Ian' or contain 'Wright'.
 
Find sites including all given words
 
This will find all records that contain all of your listed keywords. For example, choosing this option with the keywords 'Ian' and 'Wright' will find only those records that contain both those words. The first option will produce more results than the second, but may not be as focused.

To search by subject
 
Simply choose the subject from the dropdown menu.
 
To search by location
 
Use the interactive map to choose an area, or click on the Entire UK option for national sites.
 
To search by time period
 
Roll over the moving timeline to slow it down and then choose a time period.
 
Search results
 
The search results page lists the sites in alphabetical order. The 'sort by' option allows you to list the results by date, subject and location.
