Senhouse Roman Museum – the museum is next to the site of the excavation Maryport may be a supply depot, part of a westward extension of the Hadrian's Wall militarised zone, and has been known for many years.
Site director and surveyor survey the trench before excavation starts. A cache of 17 Roman stone altars was discovered in pits on the site, the largest single collection from Britain and one of the biggest anywhere in the empire, and at the end of the 19th century two stone buildings were uncovered, thought to be two temples, or a temple and mausoleum. |
