Excavating the site in 2002 In 2002, Time Team discovered a massive Roman villa in a farmer's field, in Dinnington, only inches below the turf. But despite some spectacular geophysics and incredible finds, three days weren't long enough for the team to understand such a huge site. Even as Tony was delivering his final piece at the end of day three, Phil was still discovering new mosaics...
The mosaics are revealed So Time Team returns this summer to answer some of the outstanding questions and mysteries from last time. Why is the villa so large? Was it simply the country residence of a very wealthy Roman or something more? What did it look like? Who lived there? When was it built and what happened to it- did it burnt down in a dramatic fire, as the previous dig hinted at? We hope that the dig will uncover these questions and more. In addition, to which it's going to be a key element of the jigsaw we are putting together that will tell us more about what life was like in Roman Britain. Time Team will joined with University College Winchester and Somerset County Council to conduct this excavation at Dinnington. All the normal Time Team elements will be there- geophys, landscape survey, digging, scientific analysis- but the archaeological team will be much larger than a normal Time Team, with up to 50 or 60 diggers and experts on site during the week. This site is not accessible to the general public, please do not attempt to visit. |
