Looking north to fort townfield amphitheatre
Charterhouse is a key site in Roman Britain, and has long been known, having been investigated by 19th century antiquarians. It was one of the chief sources of lead in the province, brought quickly into large scale production (by AD49 at the latest). There was a fort here in the first century when the site was under imperial control and the military oversaw mining operations, part of which has been investigated archaeologically.

Although it has recently been subject to detailed earthwork survey, the site has never been subject to geophysical survey, and surprisingly little is known about its date, extent and nature.
