Questions about the television programmes

How do I find out the latest from Dinnington?

There are three ways to find out the latest from Dinnington
a) sign up to our e-mail updates list and you will get exclusive updates before they hit our website
b) check the website during the day, you'll find updates, reports from our location teams and maybe even some uploaded pics taken by the team on their mobiles!
c) Press the red button on your tv set. We are providing one exclusive short bulletin each day – it might not always be from Dinnington but it won't be broadcast on the main channel. Exclusive, or what?

Where are the Time Team actually going to be filming?

Time Team will be focused on our ten key digs but if there are any really great finds or interesting stories their roving reporters will be out and about to pick these up aswell.

Questions about using the website

How do I apply to be part of a dig?

Applications to take part in the digs are now closed.

Can I dig a testpit?

The Big Roman Dig is not encouraging people to dig test-pits. This time we are focused on either large scale digs or on the amazing range of activities available across the country.

How do I send in an MMS to you?

First you will need to have a camera phone! Once you have established that you have one and you have taken a picture that you want to go on the website then you will need to e-mail it to us via your phone. Use the send option on your phone to send the picture to us via e-mail. The e-mail address is bigromandig@channel4.com.

Tell us

  • who you are
  • what the picture is of
  • when it was taken
  • where it was taken

We will pick it up and if it's a good one we'll put it on the website. If you have problems working out how to send an MMS e-mail from your phone the best thing to do is to either call your mobile operator or visit their website where they are likely to have specific instructions to enable you to send messages from your phone and on your payment plan.

NB Please raise the number of pixels or the resolution of the pictures taken by your phone. It will make them better quality! Refer to your manufacturer or service provider for details of how to do that.

What kind of MMS pictures will make it onto the site?

We're looking for pictures of you enjoying the Big Roman Dig. Whether you are at a dig or on an activity or roadshow it would be good to see your finds, dirty hands and fun experiences. Please ensure that if you are taking a picture of a kid that you have the consent of the parent, and it's better if you don't take pictures of their faces.

I can't see the Ye Gods! game. What can I do?

You will need to get Flash installed on your computer. This is a simple process and free and will enable you to see loads of content that you couldn't see before all over the web. Go to this page and follow the instructions to install.

Using the map

Where is the map?

The map is in the section entitled 'Dig Database'.

How do I search for a type of object?

Type in the object you are interested in the search box in the top left hand corner of the page. The other way you can do this is to check the Timeline at the bottom of the page.

How do I search through a region?

There are a number of ways to do this –

  1. Put your postcode in the postcode box and press the OK button.
  2. Click on the area of the map that you are interested in viewing you will then be taken to that area and you will be able to see any interesting finds, digs, roadshows etc highlighted on the map in a visual way. There is a key to the symbols on the left hand side of the map.
  3. Click on the 'More search options' text on the top of the map in the dark blue box, then choose the drop down box which says 'County &ndash All' and pick the area of the country that you would like to search in from the drop down.
  4. Click on the box 'Zoom in' on the top of the map in the grey band. Then draw a box on the map in the area you are interested in seeing. The map will then zoom in to that area

How do I search for my nearest site or activity?

You can either input the name of your nearest town or village into the "Search" box at the top of the map in the blue strip. Or you can input your postcode to the "Postcode" box at the top of the map in the blue strip. You will be able to see any activities or sites in your local area.

How do I get the aerial photos and Roman Map to appear on/in the map?

Find the box that says 'Map Overlays' on the left hand side of the map. Click on the highlighted orange button that says 'None' on the left hand side of the map. Once this has turned blue you can start to apply the two other views, Aerial Photos and Roman Map.

At the bottom of the box entitled 'Map Overlays' you will see three buttons 100% 50% and 25% these enable you to see more than one map or picture at a time. Try experimenting with them so that you can see eg where Roman sites are in relation to Big Roman Dig activities or what the landscape around a Roman site looks like now.

I can't see an aerial photo. What's wrong?

For some areas of the country we don't have any aerial photos. It is likely that the area you are looking at doesn't have one.

How do I get a closer look at the map?

Click first on the 'Zoom in' box on the top of the map. Then draw a box on the section of the map of England that you would like a closer look at and the map will zoom in.
