Big Roman Dig
  Propose an activity

We had an amazing response to our call for activity proposals as part of the Big Roman Dig. The site is now closed for new proposals.

However, if you are an individual who would like to do a research or photography project as part of the Big Roman Dig, you can still apply to do so here.

You can apply to take part in one of the many activities that will be taking place during the Big Roman Dig. Click here to apply.

And there will also be many open days and roadshows going on around the country, which are open to all to attend! Click here to view roadshows near you.

Here are just some of the kinds of activity that have been proposed as part of the Big Roman Dig:

bullet pointRoman marching-camp construction
The team will build a section of marching-camp wall this summer (a 4ft-deep trench and 2m wall) with the assistance of the Army Engineering Cadet Corp and local volunteers. This is a large project allowing supervising archaeologists to learn about construction techniques and the army/volunteers to learn about Roman military life.
Community archaeological group in Scotland.

bullet pointRoman military training
Eight infantry soldiers have volunteered to be trained as Roman soldiers for a week. This will involve being drilled by a Roman officer, learning to handle Roman weapons and experiencing life as a Roman soldier through route marching and making camp – all with authentic replica Roman equipment.

bullet pointSupervised test pitting
Local archaeologists have volunteered to supervise 5–10 residents of a single street to dig test pits in their gardens. This will help clarify the nature of the Roman site under the town. The local museum will help identify and store finds.

bullet pointRoman walk
Local fell-walking society will be following a Roman route from Ambleside Roman fort (Galava) to Brougham. This guided walk will pass several important Roman sites and will be open to all.
Lake District fell-walking club.

bullet pointMuseum roman finds day
An illustrated talk about Roman finds held at a Cambridgeshire Museum, aimed at 11+ children. A local specialist will be showing finds, explaining where they were found and giving more in-depth information about the museum's collection and the finds discovered around the local area.
Cambridgeshire, Museum
