The Big Dig is an exciting project from Channel 4's Time Team. All the major heritage management organisations in Britain as well as archaeologists working in all fields are being consulted to make sure that the best archaeological standards are applied and supported across the whole country.
Time Team's Mick Aston says: 'The Big Dig is a great opportunity for members of the public to get involved in some real archaeology, using appropriate methods, to learn something significant about their own area and to contribute to archaeological knowledge.'
Other prominent organisations such as the Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers (ALGAO) and the Council for British Archaeology (CBA) are also working with us to ensure that people with no previous experience can get as much as possible out of taking part. The aim is to show people, at first hand, how archaeology helps us understand our past and how we can conserve the physical evidence for future generations.
'We know that people care about their heritage and history,' says Tony Robinson, 'but if we really want them to take responsibility for looking after it and helping preserve it, we need to show them how archaeology works and why it's so important. What better way to do that than by giving people the chance to get their hands dirty?'
