Henry VII (1457-1509)Ruled 1485-1509
The son of Edmund Tudor, the earl of Richmond, Henry's claim to the throne came through his mother, who was a descendant of Edward III. He seized the throne after Richard III was defeated and killed at the Battle of Bosworth. He died on 21 April 1509.

Henry VIII (1491-1547)
Ruled 1509-1547
One of England’s most famous kings, Henry was the second son of Henry VII, becoming heir to the throne as a result of his brother Arthur dying young. He died on 28 January 1547.

Edward VI (1537-1553)
Ruled 1547-1553
Edward was the son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, who died 12 days after giving birth to him. He was just nine years old when he was crowned, but that didn’t stop him writing his own 'Device for the Succession', excluding his sisters Elizabeth and Mary and transferring the throne to his cousins, the Greys. He died, probably of tuberculosis, on 6 July 1553.

Mary (1516-1558)
Ruled 1553-1558
Edward VI's plan to have Lady Jane Grey made queen came to nothing. Instead, Mary's supporters won the day and Jane was later beheaded. Mary, the only child of Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon, died just five years after taking the throne on 16 November 1558.

Elizabeth I (1533-1603)
Ruled 1558-1603
Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, named as third in line to the throne after Edward VI and Mary in Henry's will. She died, still the 'Virgin Queen', on 24 March 1603.
