Big Royal Dig
Michelle Homewood
Michelle Homewood
I am an Online Tutor living with my husband in Gravesend, Kent. My hobbies are collecting swords, console gaming, reading and watching Time Team of course!

Kent has an interesting archaeological history. Gravesend is the last resting place of Pocahontas, though no-one is really sure where she’s buried.

The Three Daws Pub in Gravesend is 500 years old and was used by smugglers as an escape route off the Thames. It is well known for all the floors being completely wonky!

In the 1930's the remains of what is known as Swanscombe Man (despite it being a woman) were found in Barnfield pit in Swanscombe. I was lucky to be there in 1995 when Magnus Magnusson opened the site with the display of a plaque.

When did you first start watching Time Team?
Since it first started and have watched it ever since!

What do you enjoy most about it?
It gives us an insight into the parts of local history you don’t get in history books, and presents it in a way that makes you feel like part of the dig. The excitement when something rare is revealed for the first time is always worth watching.

Do you have a favourite moment from Time Team?
There are so many I don't think I could really pick one!

Have you ever been on an archaeological dig before?
No. I have seen the results of the digs, but never taken part in one.

What do you think is the most remarkable archaeological find in the world?
Tutankhamun's tomb.

And the UK?
The Sutton Hoo mounds and treasure collection in Suffolk.

If you could dig anywhere in the world where would you choose?
The Valley of the Kings.

How do you feel about taking part in the Big Royal Dig?
I think it's an honour to be able to dig in such a famous location as Buckingham Palace and be one of the first in many years to see what could be hidden under one of the most famous of gardens.

I know it's not going to be an easy ride and we have no idea what we're going to find, but as long as it doesn't rain I'll be fine!
