At this time, the palace consisted of three wings around a central courtyard. The east wing, facing the Mall, was added at the end of Victoria's reign. At the same time, Marble Arch, which used to be the formal entrance to the palace, was moved to its present location near Speakers' Corner. The east façade got its current appearance, including its famous royal balcony, when it was redesigned and refaced in Portland stone in 1913.
Time Team's targets
The earlier housesBuckingham Palace is built on the site of several earlier houses: Goring House, built in the 1620s; Arlington House, built in the 1670s after Goring House had burned down; and Buckingham House. The remains of all three pre-palace structures are thought to lie under the footprint of the modern palace, and are inaccessible for excavation.
