Party food

Party food
It's party time this week and Gillian McKeith is down the bowling alley to see if the ten-pin fans know how to have a good time without breaking the calorie bank.

Put to the test are three party meals:

  • Deli platter
  • Pork pies, with a dip, celery and tomatoes
  • Mixed party platter of cocktail sausages, half a scotch egg, some honey roast nuts, salmon roules and raw vegetables

So, which one did the ten-pin bowlers think had the highest calories? 48 out of 100 plumped for the party platter. Were they right?

The meal that knocked over the most calories was the pork pies at 849 calories. This is equivalent to 7 bite-size Cornish pasties, 18 tiger prawns wrapped in filo pastry or 38 vegetable sushi rolls.

The exact placings were:
  • Pork pies – 849 calories (the pork pies alone account for 726 calories)
  • Mixed party platter – 612 calories a serving
  • Deli platter – 453 calories

If you like nuts think about some alternatives to honey roast nuts which can be up to 600 calories per 100g:

  • Morrison's Luxury Fruit and Nut Collection – 480 calories per 100g
  • Sainsbury's Jumbo Cashews, Raspberry & Cranberry mix – 494 calories per 100g
  • Asda Trail Mix – 369 calories per 100g
