Canteen Lunches

Canteen lunches
It's the London cabbies' turn this week to put their calorie-counting knowledge to the test. Gillian McKeith joins her cabbies in their canteen and asks which of the following three lunches they think has the most calories:
  • Jacket potato and baked beans
  • Cheddar cheese Ploughman's
  • Scampi, chips and peas

Which one did they choose? 68% of the cabbies she asked said the Scampi and Chips has the highest number of calories. Were they right?

In fact, the highest-caloried canteen lunch turned out to be the Ploughman's with its hefty chunk of cheese coming in at a hefty 1019 calories. This is equivalent to two roast chicken breasts or 14 slices of honey roast ham. The final order was:

  • Ploughman's – 1019 calories
  • Scampi and chips – 947 calories
  • Jacket potato and baked beans – 711 calories

If it's fish and chips you fancy then Gillian suggested you cut out the breaded and fried scampi and instead go for a simple baked or grilled fish fillet for around 80 calories per 100g. If you just can't resist a coating on your fish then look out for Morrison's Fresh Plaice or Haddock Fillet at 95 calories and 199 calories per serving respectively. Or try M&S Lightly Dusted Plaice Fillets at 207 calories a serving and Waitrose Prime Lemon Sole Fillets in a herb seasoning at 184 calories per serving.
