This week Gillian challenged the workers at Billingsgate Fish Market to see how much they know about the calories in some typical breakfasts. The three breakfasts were:
  • Full English fried breakfast
  • Blueberry muffin and skimmed milk latte
  • Crunchy oat cereal, Greek yoghurt, honey and orange juice

She asked 100 Billingsgate workers which of these three breakfasts they thought had the most calories. The response – 63 said the Full English breakfast had the most calories. Were they right?

No! The calorie counts were actually:
  • Blueberry muffin and skimmed milk latte – 784 calories
  • Crunchy oat cereal, Greek Yoghurt, honey and orange juice – 574 calories
  • Full English – 339 calories

The breakfast with the highest calorie count - 784 calories - was the muffin and coffee which came in at the equivalent to 13 jaffa cakes!

If you do start your day with a Full English, Gillian suggests you use rindless back bacon, grill the tomatoes and mushrooms and use wholemeal bread without butter.

She also said take a look at Sugar-Free Alpen and Sainsbury's Organic Muesli for alternative cereals which come in at 180 calories and 150 calories per portion respectively.
