Episode One - Southwark College - Apology and Clarification

In Episode One of Can't Read, Can't Write Phil Beadle is shown observing a class at Southwark College where adult students are being taught by a lecturer. Later in this part, Mr Beadle discusses his views with Diana Hawkes and states that he found the experience upsetting because the "...provision was incompetent".

It was not the intention of the programme to criticise either Southwark College or the lecturer personally. The sole intention of the programme makers was to refer to and to scrutinise the government's provision for adult literacy and the government's course materials.

Channel 4 is extremely grateful to Southwark College for allowing such extensive access to film in the College and in addition, for the kind of hospitality and cooperation of its staff during the making of the programme. Channel 4 apologies to both Southwark College and the lecturer for any distress that may have been caused as a result of the broadcast of Can't Read Can't Write on 21st July 2008.
