Winston's Wish is the child bereavement charity that helps children and young people come to terms with the death of a parent or sibling.

Throughout the Mummy Diaries series it has provided support and counselling for all the families involved as well as providing continuing support after the filming has stopped. The charity was set up by Julie Stokes, the clinical psychologist featured in the series.

By providing professional assistance before, during and after bereavement, it helps children and their families to better understand the nature of loss and offers the practical support and guidance that many need in order to journey through the grieving process.

Every 30 minutes, a child in the UK is bereaved of a parent, equating to 20,000 new children each year learning to live with a powerful range of confusing and conflicting emotions. Unexpressed, these emotions may have damaging consequences in later life for the individual, their family and society as a whole.

Winston's Wish is now recognised as the leading organisation in this field and its pioneering model of family support has been adapted and used by many other organisations throughout the UK and abroad. Every year, over 4000 people supporting over 8000 bereaved children use the national helpline (08452 03 04 05) for guidance and support.

In 1999 the charity won the Guardian Jerwood Charity Award, set-up to celebrate innovative work by smaller voluntary organisations.

Now in its 15th year, it has a range of services that include the national helpline group and individual work with bereaved children and their families; specialist projects to help children cope with deep trauma, such as family suicides or the violent death of a parent; and a range of publications and resources that are available via www.winstonswish.org.uk
