Ness was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. It spread to her lungs, sternum and brain. The family had been dealing with Vanessa's cancer for so long that, more than any of the other families, they learnt to accept it and be open about it.
Ness also had a great relationship with her sister Nic and mother Dianne, who are close to the girls and an important part of their lives. Importantly, Ness felt safe leaving the girls in their hands.
Mike dotes on his girls and is very hands-on – he'll buy tampons at the supermarket and talk boyfriends. He has encouraged the girls to be independent and have lots of friends so they will have a good support network.
