Bereavement

Death, it is often observed, is a part of life. It is inevitable, and inevitably tragic. But it becomes all the more tragic when it happens too early. It is difficult enough for adults to reconcile themselves to premature death, either their own or that of a loved one, but when a child is bereaved, it can be a devastating experience.

As the families in the Mummy Diaries show, the age of a child has a direct impact on their understanding of death. As a child gets older, their ability to understand death and dying increases and so we talk about the understanding of death as being a developmental process.

To help you feel more confident about what to explain to children about death, and how, it is helpful and necessary to appreciate what children know about death and what they are capable of learning at the various stages of their development.
