· Hands are seldom as well-tended as faces, and have to take regular punishment from hot water, sun and cold winds. The main cause of those unsightly hallmarks of ageing – brown spots, raised veins and wrinkled skin – is the sun, which creates age marks and reduces the skin's elasticity. Use an SP15 sun factor cream daily on hands. |
|
· Pick a rich anti-ageing hand cream and use it to moisturise your hands lavishly every time you wash them or put them in water. Many contain UV filters and act as a useful year-round sunscreen. Anti-ageing creams contain ingredients to help age spots fade and discourage new ones, and some can discourage the thinning of collagen under the skin which makes the backs of hands look corded and wrinkled.
· Use gloves whenever you garden or do housework, and when you go out in winter.
· For very dry skin, apply a generous helping of hand cream before bed, and wear cotton gloves overnight to keep the moisture in.
· Cold fingers? Keep circulation moving with this exercise: Clench hands into fists, then quickly splay and stretch the fingers as wide as they will reach. Hold for a couple of seconds, repeat 10 times. |

· Hangnails develop when hands are too dry. Rub hand cream into your cuticles several times a day, or treat them to a special cuticle cream.
· To treat cuticles that grow too high up the nail – and most do – first soften them with cuticle remover. Then use an orange stick to push the cuticle back very gently. Circle the stick lightly around the base of the nail to remove residue.
· Never use scissors on your cuticles. Use a cuticle nipper to trim ragged edges. |
| | |

· If nails are quite long, trim them with fingernail clippers or proper manicure scissors before filing. Don't cut them shorter than 3mm of white nail above the pink.
· Metal files are way too harsh. Use a soft file or emery board, and file from edge to centre, never from side to side.
· White spots on the nail are caused by knocks to the nail, not by any dietary deficiency. If your nails break or flake easily you might not be getting enough protein.
· Brittle nails, or ridges, are signs of ageing. You can buy ridge fillers to use under nail polish. A frosted or pearlised shade disguises unevenness.
· If you don't want to draw attention to square or very short nails, paint them with a polish that's close to your skin tone.
· Leave a fine line unpainted on either side of very wide nails, to make them look narrower.
· If you chip the polish on just one nail, fill in with thin touches of the same colour, then give the whole nail two coats of polish to conceal.
