Girls Home

As we get older we start to understand our sexuality and sexual orientation. You might find yourself noticing other girls more than boys. And those friendly hugs and practise snogs can start to become a lot more loaded. But does that mean you’re a lesbian?

''The government estimates that between 5 and 7% of the UK population are LGB (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual).''

In a school of around 1500 students that means that at least 75 of the pupils, will be lesbian, gay or bisexual and that’s a conservative estimate.

Sexuality

It’s common for young people to experiment with their sexuality and to wonder about sex and relationships.

''17% of people surveyed in the UK have had a same sex experience.'' Durex Global Sex Survey 2005

Nothing is set in stone and although it can be an exciting time, it can also be frustrating. You might feel different from everyone else or find it difficult to meet other gay people. Growing up and questioning your sexuality can feel quite lonely.

''I love gingerbeer.co.uk. It’s just a great place to chat and meet people.'' Amanda, 17

Online

If you're feeling isolated, why not try and go online. It’s a great place to meet people and chat about your feelings without revealing your identity.

There are sites aimed specifically at lesbians and bisexual women like gingerbeer.co.uk that have message boards and chat rooms. And popular networking sites like MySpace or Bebo have large gay communities.
