Addiction: Debate

Binge drinkers: addicts or idiots?

Pint of beerIn 2003, a government report stated that the UK's binge drinking culture was costing the country £20 billion a year. Some people argue that more money should be spent on alcohol services, and on education for binge drinkers.

Policeman David Copperfield thinks otherwise: 'I deal with addicts on a regular basis. The one thing they have in common is that they refuse to take responsibility for their actions. Binge drinkers are the same: they drink too much, then get into a fight and cannot see the connection between the two. Binge drinkers are not addicts – they're drunken idiots!'
