Alcohol slows the level of brain activity and the speed at which messages are transmitted. Alcohol's precise mechanism of action in the brain is not completely understood, but it's known to be able to alter the activity of several types of neurotransmitter receptor proteins within the brain. Consumption of even small quantities of alcohol can result in altered brain function, even if the drinker is not aware of it. Long-term use is associated with mental illness and even brain damage.
