Alcohol is often called a 'social lubricant' and people may have a drink in many situations to help them relax. Whether it is a date or meeting with business colleagues after work, alcohol has the effect of lifting inhibitions and making social contact easier. In non-Muslim society, alcohol features at a variety of social occasions including weddings and wakes as guests use drink to help them celebrate or find solace. There's a common belief that alcohol is an aphrodisiac but in fact it depresses sexual responsiveness in men and women. 'It provokes the desire but takes away the performance,' as Shakespeare put it.
