Marijuana was probably first used as an intoxicant in India around 1000BC and soon became an integral part of Hindu culture and religious ceremony. Other religions use it too such as Rastafarianism, which regards it as the 'wisdom weed' or the herb of life mentioned in the Bible. But it's as a recreational drug that cannabis has taken the world by storm, and today it is second in popularity only to alcohol. It's estimated that at least one person in 20 in the UK has used it. Famous 'tokers' include ex-President of the United States, Bill Clinton, who said he tried a joint 'but didn't inhale', when he was a student at Oxford University.
