Does it damage mental health?

The jury's still out on this one. But there is growing concern over this aspect of cannabis consumption and some evidence of causal link to serious mental disorder. Psychiatrists and health experts believe that cannabis could trigger some pre-disposition to mental illness. Other research suggests that heavy cannabis usage may, in a percentage of the population with a susceptible gene type, prompt 'schizophreniform' symptoms. These might include confusion, hearing voices, feeling 'disembodied', or incoherent speech. Paradoxically, some people who are mentally ill, self-medicate with cannabis to offset some of the harsher effects of drugs they have been prescribed.
