Alcohol is the general name for a family of chemically related compounds and is found in products as diverse as meths and anti-freeze. The drinkable form of alcohol present in intoxicating beverages is known as ethanol, a chemical that contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen – or CH3CH2OH, to the boffins.
