Q: I am two weeks late for my period and I was wondering if me being stressed was stopping it starting? Michelle, 16 |

There could be a number of reasons why you missed your period. Have your periods always been regular? Some women often have irregular periods. Missing a period is a lot more common than most people realise. There are many reasons for this, apart from being pregnant.
One of the commonest reasons for a change in the menstrual cycle is mental stress. Stress can affect the normal balance of hormones in your body, causing your period to come late, or skip for a month. The stress of undergoing major changes in your life, such as moving, exams, starting a new job or a new relationship, might well have this effect.
Changes in your eating habits, losing or gaining large amounts of weight, and heavy exercise programmes, cause physical stress and can also result in changes to your periods.
There are also some medical conditions which affect the menstrual cycle. If you don't have a period for two months, you should visit your GP to get yourself checked out.
