What is high definition?

High definition (HD or HDTV) is a newer standard of digital television broadcasting that offers sharper, more detailed pictures and surround sound.

How does high definition differ from standard definition?

High definition (HD) requires an entirely separate broadcast stream from current standard definition (SD) broadcasting.

More4 HD will be transmitted using the 1080i HD format, the standard for HD transmission in the UK.

More4 HD will show a proportion of its acquired programmes with 5.1 surround sound. To hear this, you usually need a separate surround sound system and speakers, often known as a home cinema system.

What will I need to view the More4 HD service?

The More4 HD service is available on Virgin Media, at channel 203 to XL pack customers; and on Sky HD on channel 138 in the UK and 236 in the Republic of Ireland, to customers who take the HD Pack. You will also need an HD-ready TV.

Will all More4 programmes be in HD?

More4 HD is a direct simulcast of the core More4 schedule. Many of the programmes will have been made in native HD format, and your on-screen EPG will indicate which these are. The remaining non-HD programmes will be up-converted from the SD source material.

Will More4 HD have subtitles or audio description?

Yes, for the same programmes as standard definition More4.

Will all HD programmes be available with 5.1 surround sound?

Not all, but some will have 5.1 surround sound and the on-screen guide will indicate which these are.

Why are black bars sometimes still visible on a 16x9 HDTV?

Original HDTV programming is made in an aspect ratio of 16x9 (1.78), which fits the dimensions of widescreen TV’s. However, many theatrically released films are made in an aspect ratio of either 1.85 or 2.35. Therefore, when viewing these films on HDTV (if presented in their original theatrical aspect ratio) - you will see black bars on your 16x9 screen. Up-converted 4x3 programmes will also appear with black bars on the left and right.
