An amazingly friendly and helpful centre in Hackney, East London, where you can edit on Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Combustion and Flash for £35 per six hour day. Open Wednesday to Friday and booking is essential. They also do great value post-production courses.

Four Corners is a long-established centre in Bow for moving image and photography. They're brilliant for helping career development in new filmmakers. Here, you can hire DV, 16mm or Beta SP equipment to film on, from £20 a day. Sound equipment is from £30 a day, and offline editing is from £100.

Free training, equipment and editing, but you have to live in Camden or Islington and attend their part-time courses. An amazing opportunity to have a £500 budget and professional help if you do though.

2.Often local arts centres and cinemas have equipment lying around that they don't publicise
3.If you're at college or university, it will almost certainly have a film society with some level of kit, or be entitled to apply for some.
4.Best of all, speak to your regional screen agency for advice - there's a full list here on the Screen Yorkshire website
5. Speak to the Community Media Association (see above)
