SPACE MEDIA ARTS, LONDON E8 3RH

An amazingly friendly and helpful centre in Hackney, East London, where you can edit on Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Combustion and Flash for £35 per six hour day. Open Wednesday to Friday and booking is essential. They also do great value post-production courses.

FOUR CORNERS, LONDON

Four Corners is a long-established centre in Bow for moving image and photography. They're brilliant for helping career development in new filmmakers. Here, you can hire DV, 16mm or Beta SP equipment to film on, from £20 a day. Sound equipment is from £30 a day, and offline editing is from £100.

MAKE TV, CAMDEN, LONDON

Free training, equipment and editing, but you have to live in Camden or Islington and attend their part-time courses. An amazing opportunity to have a £500 budget and professional help if you do though.

An educational charity in Camden,whose objective is the education and empowerment of adults, children and young people in the art of film, video and other types of media. They aim to work particularly with those people who are in need by reason of disability, age or economic circumstance. They also house the cooperative Exp TV, who offer free editing for their members.

A media arts centre in Belfast offering access, training and resources in digital video, television and new media to people marginalized by mainstream media or denied self and/or collective expression. Theire resources are free if you're making programmes for their cable TV station.

Excellent source of all things innovative in moving images in the North, with an emphasis on the artyer end. They have an audio-visual resource for everyone to use, with prices from £30 for hiring cameras and from just £5 for add-ons like microphones.

Organisation offering 25 years of experience in helping low-budget filmmakers. They provide facilities hire, film and media training and initiate local and community production schemes. Generally just a great source of info and resources!

Digital media facility in North-East Scotland offering comprehensive broadcast quality media production, post-production and training services to small businesses, community groups and individuals at affordable rates - daily rates from just £6 for cameras, £20 for lights, £20 for sound; £32 for Avid suite. And you get a better deal if you're a community group or low/unwaged.

NOWHERE NEAR YOU?

1.Ask around.
2.Often local arts centres and cinemas have equipment lying around that they don't publicise
3.If you're at college or university, it will almost certainly have a film society with some level of kit, or be entitled to apply for some.
4.Best of all, speak to your regional screen agency for advice - there's a full list here on the Screen Yorkshire website
5. Speak to the Community Media Association (see above)
6.Failing all that, some basic free editing packages are available via the link at the bottom of this page (we can't guarantee how good they are though!)
