The Lift provides a window into the daily lives of the extraordinary range of people living in a high-rise council block in London. It is such a simple idea but very effective. Marc sat in the lift for several days filming people as they came and went. At first it is interesting to watch people's reaction to finding a man filming inside a lift: he doesn't explain his reason for being there at first, so you can see them trying to figure it out. As time goes on and the residents get used to him being there, they volunteer a range of information about their lives which are interesting in their variety. Marc won the Grierson award for Best Newcomer in 2002 and has been shown at festivals around the world.
