The CCF, or schools Combined Cadet Force, is a programme within schools for children to get army training. It is heavily subsidised by the Ministry of Defence. However many of the children say they are members not because they want to go into the army but because it increases their fitness and self-confidence. The boys also do it because they want to play with guns, although the Ministry of Defence look down on this element. More girls have been joining and although they experience sexism, they don't mind because it means they get a helping hand over the high wall.
