You must have the consent of at least one parent (with custody) of any children or young people (i.e. under 18) appearing in your film. Consent from both child and parent should be recorded on camera as per the provisions in section [insert] above. The only exception to this, where parental consent might not be necessary, is where the child or young person’s involvement is minimal and his/her contribution relates to the least sensitive interview topics. In addition, but just as importantly, you should always attempt to obtain the consent of the parent before any filming with the child takes places, if possible.
Any filming with children and young people requires thought and care. You must have regard to their welfare at all times. You should take care to ensure that any children or young people appearing in your film have not as a result been caused any distress or alarm and under no circumstances may children be put at physical or moral risk e.g. in programmes about criminal activity.
Finally, children should not generally be asked about confidential family matters nor should they be asked about matters which are likely to be beyond their judgement.
