The perfect pull-up-a-chair-and-tuck-in comfort dish for the whole family

This recipe is from Becky, from I'm Running Sainsbury's

Serves 4
Takes 25 minutes to prep, 1 hour 15 minutes to cook

Nutritional Information

Per serving:
543cals
19.4g fat (6.2g saturated)
37.8g sugars
2.5g salt

Ingredients

  • 454g British pork sausages (50% less fat)
  • 2 carrots
  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 1 leek
  • 1 onion
  • 2 apples
  • ½ litre apple juice
  • 1 vegetable stock cube
  • 100g self-raising flour (plus extra for coating the veg)
  • 25g butter
  • Splash or two of milk
  • Salt

Method: How to make sausage and apple cobbler

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas mark 4.

2. Grill the pork sausages until browned. Place in a casserole dish.

3. Peel and slice the cored apples, carrots and onion, and chop the leek and celery. Toss the veg in a little self-raising flour until coated then add to the sausages. Make 250ml vegetable stock, using 1 stock cube, and stir in ½ litre apple juice. Pour the stock over the sausages and veg, then bake for 45 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, make the cobbler topping by rubbing the butter into the self-raising flour with a sprinkling of salt, until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add a little milk until the mixture forms a soft dough. Shape into small, slightly squashed balls.

5. Once the casserole has baked for 45 minutes, take out of the oven and top with the balls. Bake for a further 30 minutes and serve immediately.

  1. excellent programme - perhaps the BAG was the mistake, but surely it would make commercial sense to run with all ingredients you need being together - BUT if the customer has some of the ingredients at home, they don't need to buy them, and if they WANT to substitute they can do it. I hope Sainsburys make this recipe available in store too - my wife has already told me I've got to cook it!

  2. Becky don't be downhearted, I thought it was a brilliant idea. If only it had had a big ad campaign I think it would have been successful - lots of us busy working mums would appreciate the convenience. I tried the recipe and it was delicious.

  4. I thought this idea was absolutely fantastic. I'm always trying to think of new recipes to feed my family without spending a fortune on buying ingredients in bulk when I only need a bit of something. If this bag doesn't work, then surely the whole 'feed your family for a fiver' campaign seems pointless? i would buy this for sure if they had it in my store - would be great if you could have different bags to choose from. And I agree - get it advertised!! No point trying to sell something that no one knows about - it's sure to fail !!!

  5. If the store had placed the item in a better position and gone with a different dish then it could of been a possible money spinner for Sainsburys.

  6. Becky's idea is brilliant. It's certainly something I would buy regularly as a working mother. How about trialling a few more recipes for summer.

  7. I watched the programme tonight and must say I was really impressed with Becky's idea that I felt compelled to comment. I think that Sainsburys should have done further promotions about the idea -maybe a newspaper/magazine or TV advertisement and possibly have Jamie Oliver demonstrating the product and explaining the ease of finding having all the products available. I don't think that enough time was given to trial the idea. I for one would have certainly been into Sainsburys and bought this had it been available in my local store (Preston)and I had received media cover. I often check websites for Sainsburys deals so maybe consider advertising it further. I will definitely try the recipe and wish Becky every success in the future

  8. Feed a family for a fiver in a bag - brilliant idea. I would have brought it, please give it a bash in store through out the country.
