Toffee and Bonfire Night have been going together for centuries. This traditional Gunpowder Plot toffee recipe is a classic.

Ingredients

  • 1lb unrefined cane sugar
  • 4 oz butter
  • 4 oz treacle
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Method: How to make Gunpowder Plot toffee

1. Put everything except vinegar in a saucepan and bring to the boil, stirring constantly.

2. Boil gently for 15-20 minutes, still stirring, until a drop of mixture becomes brittle when dropped into cold water.

3. Remove from heat and stir in vinegar.

4. Pour into a well-greased shallow tin.

5. When nearly set, score deeply with a knife into bite-sized squares.
