Say "Tartar" to life without potato cakes. Have a go at making them yourself with this recipe from Ian.

Serves 5

Ingredients

  • 4 big maris piper potatoes - peeled and cut into slices 1 inch thick
  • 1 tbsp capers
  • 1 tbsp anchovies
  • 1 tbsp shallots
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • butter

Method: How to make tartar potato cakes

1. Boil the potatoes in salted water until just tender, then drain well and leave to cool down.

2. Butter the insides of some 6cm metallic rings, and press the potato in to make a firm layer. Next, make a layer of capers, shallots and anchovies.

3. Top it off with another layer of potato, smoothing it out with the back of a spoon, then fry gently in butter for two mins.

4. Turn cakes over and bake in a moderate oven for about 20 minutes

5. For a vegan alternative, use half a clove of garlic instead of the anchovies, and use soya margerine instead of butter.

  1. enjoyed this prog. from Liverpool, contestants seemed to enjoy each other's company, makes a change from the bickering & bitching on some previous programmes. Will be attempting some of the recipies from this programme in the near future.

  2. I loved browsing and printing off recipes, but why oh why have I got to print off the page with photos and other extraneous stuff! That uses up so much of the inkjet. These pictures etc., are scissored off before the recipes go in my binder. Look to Hairy Bikers site, where you can print off recipes and not have all the accompanying print, photos etc., just the recipes.
