Not got green fingers? Why not try growing your own bread? It worked for Christine Wright in Come Dine With Me Huddersfield

Makes 6

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp dried easy-blend yeast
  • 325g strong white flour, plus extra for kneading
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 200ml tepid water
  • 1 tbsp walnut oil
  • Softened butter, for greasing

Method: How to make plant pot bread

1. Mix the yeast with the flour and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre and add the water and oil. Mix well with a wooden spoon until a dough is formed. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 - 10 minutes or until the dough is smooth and elastic.

2. Divide the dough into six balls and place in clean terracotta plant pots lined with well buttered baking parchment. (Only use new pots for cooking.) Cover loosely with oiled cling film. Leave in a warm place to rise for about an hour or until doubled in size. If you don’t have any pots, form the dough into balls and leave to rise on a baking sheet.

3. Preheat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5. Remove the cling film and place the pots on a sturdy baking sheet. Bake the bread for 30 minutes until well risen and golden brown. Cool for a few minutes in the pots then turn onto a wire rack. Serve freshly baked.

Please note this recipe is the contestant's own and has not been tested professionally. Like the Come Dine With Me contestants, you could be creating a culinary delight or dining disaster, so switch on your ovens and be bold.

  1. As an alternative to pot bread, make 16 oz dough (about 400 grms), and after the initial proving, divide it into eight and roll into balls. Place one in teh centre and the remaining 7 around the edge of a greased cake tine. Prove again until they all merge, then bake until golden brown. I call them "Bread Flowers".It make a nice ornament on the table for the soup course.
