The Botham ladies have been baking cakes in Whitby since 1865 when widower Elizabeth Botham set up shop to provide an income for her eight-strong brood.
Now, 143 years later it's the turn of her great grandchildren to keep the legacy of fine cakes and baked goods going strong. With a tea shop in Whitby and a thriving online mail order service the family supply the nation with regional favourites like plum breads, ginger biscuits and orange tea bread. And it's all hands on deck – the firm employs Grandma, two sisters, two brothers, a brother-in-law - even the nieces and nephews pull their weight in the kitchen during the university holidays.
