A quick look at the your local supermarkets will reveal that each have their own way of labelling pork. M&S
were recognised by the RSPCA as having clear labelling while Waitrose are currently the only supermarket to use only British pork in all products clearly labelling the country of origin. Good news for British farmers is that all of the Co-op's pork will be sourced locally by the end of March 2009. Tesco's non-UK producers all have to meet their particular standards.
But move away from fresh meat and the story changes. The moment you smoke, cure, cook, or process in any way, the label doesn't have to tell you where that pork has come from. A 'British' pork pie for example may well contain meat from Holland, France or Denmark.
