The Red Tractor essentially represents the lowest welfare standards required to rear pigs in Britain. These benchmarks are the highest in the EU alongside Sweden: sows are not crated during pregnancy and castration to avoid 'boar-taint' has been outlawed; straw is required for pigs to root around in and lie on. However, the fact remains that the bulk of pork produced in the UK is raised intensively.
