Hugh's on a mission to tackle the fish crisis

Fish ‘n Chips. It's an iconic British dish. Fish is one of the UK’s favourite foods and the benefits of eating it regularly are widely reported. Yet with fish stocks diminishing there’s a crisis at sea.

So what’s a fish lover to do? Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall begins an investigative culinary journey around the British Isles to tackle the issue in River Cottage: Gone Fishing

Hoping to discover alternative, delicious and sustainable seafood that fishmongers should be selling and we should be eating, Hugh’s fish fact-finding journey begins in the Channel Islands.

Armed with a fishing rod, an adventurous palate and with plenty of help from local fish fanciers he discovers a vast array of underrated seafood, and great ways of making it taste fantastic.

  1. Hi, I think it's excellent that you're trying to get people to eat more sustainable & less fashionable fish, I did try to buy Pollack from a local supermarket, but it was horrendously expensive compared to Cod! I ended up buying Coley instead, but have to ask, is Pollack attracting a premium price or was I just unlucky?

  2. hiyah, i am wanting to see if hugh can do programme on sourcing halah free range chickens. As a practicing muslim i think that the muslim community do not care enough about the compassionate rearing of livestock.A chicken that is butchered the halah why might still have come from a cage and have had a painful iserable life. This breaches the muslim code of respect and care that we should show towards the anials we eat.Can we encourage muslims to eat free range and make halah butchers want to sell free range chickens so that i can buy and enjoy my chicken. When i prepare a chicken from the halah shop i can tell its not free range from the brittle bones, blood in the bones etc.can e and you do a programme on it hugh?
