Channel 4's champion of local seasonal food, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, returns to River Cottage to harvest the best that autumn has to offer.

Hugh cooks and tastes the abundant produce, from root vegetables and game to fruits from the orchard, and from peppers and chillies to cardoons and celeriac. The series celebrates the season's best and freshest, whether from the wild, the garden or the shop shelf, as Hugh offers numerous recipes to inspire and salivate over.

Back to Bristol

As ever, people from all walks of life drop in to get a dose of the River Cottage treatment, and taste a generous helping of the good life that Hugh has cooked up for them.

Hugh also catches up with the Bristol smallholders he first met in River Cottage Spring as they harvest their autumn bounty of beetroot, pots, kale, squashes and pumpkins. The experiment becomes even more hands-on when Ray the butcher shows them how to turn their pigs into salamis, sausages and hams. Plus, much-loved pig, Blossom, makes the journey back to River Cottage, where she will be used for breeding. Will there be a bunch of piglets to return to Bristol?

Peruse all River Cottage Autumn recipes.

  4. Hi Hugh, I work in a small day centre for people with disabilities on the Wirral, we only have a small garden but have been developing some raised vegetable beds with some of our wheelchair uses. Last year was the first year and we already had a brilliant crop of veg we did particulary well with cucumbers & corn on the cobs yummy! We are all really enthusiastic to see what this year holds. We would just like to say thank you for inspirering us and giving us the motivation to carry out this fantastic adventure. x x x:)

  10. Having watched Hugh struggling with his spelt, it would appear that he doesn't know about the rubber mat method. Get a rubber car mat - the kind with little rubber spikes on, tip some spelt on to this and rub it hard with your foot clad in a rubber soled shoe. This rubs the grain pretty clean and it falls down between the spikes. The chaff can be winnowed off and the grain recovered. I have grown my own spelt and done this. It works. For more details see the 'Real Seeds' website.

  16. Dear Hugh, I've really enjoyed your Autumn programme I've just watched. We grow as much we can with two full-time jobs and it is so satisfying walking round the garden and returning to the house with an armful of goodies! I look forward to the next programme Best wishes Anne Filgate

  17. I'd also like to see Hugh do more recipes for eels. They are a very underrated fish, & once skinned & diced into one and a half inch pieces can be used for a variety of dishes

  18. Having watched RC Autumn, I would have thought that Hugh would have turned the Beetroot juice into a beautiful wine, that once fermented & bottled, has a taste & colour virtually akin to a rich port. (It must however be fermented in dark demi-johns with dark bottles for bottling, or it turns Brown)
