Spring maybe the season of new life but autumn is where it all gets started. "If you want a lamb on April Fool's Day, send the ram in on Bonfire Night," explains Hugh. And today the River Cottage ewes are in for a treat as rampant ram, Eli, is on his way round.
The woolly Casanova seems a little boisterous and, ever the concerned father, Hugh hopes he'll show a softer side to the ladies on the farm. On Eli's arrival, however, the flock of females are far from sheepish.
Hugh rigs the ram up to a blue dye so he can keep track of Eli's 'comings and goings'. There's a little bit of small talk, as the ram settles in and then it's straight down to business. "Ah, now that is the real deal," enthuses an obviously impressed Hugh.
