Next Hugh visits the Freedom Food chickens. To meet RSPCA approved standards Freedom Food sheds must have be a lower stocking density, access to natural light and additional features that help the birds express their natural characteristics like perching and dust bathing.
The birds here are a more active breed and will take an extra two weeks to reach market weight which translates to an additional cost to the consumer of about £1 per bird.
Hugh's still a free range foodie, but the Freedom Food system has impressed him.
"If the whole industry at the intensive end upgraded to that level, I'd feel better about the industry," he says.
