Taking poultry plight to the boardroom is no small task. The popularity of chicken means it's a key ingredient in supermarket price wars.
"In my lifetime chicken has been transformed from a nutritious meaty treat to a bargain basement staple," says Hugh. "It's about the only food that's cheaper than it was 20 years ago."
In the 1960s, a chicken took at least 80 days to reach market weight. Modern farming techniques have reduced that time to 39 days and created a man-made bird whose rapid weight gain can leave them deformed and unable to stand or walk.
