It's Christmas at River Cottage and if that's not an excuse for a slap-up meal, nothing is
Hugh's keen on a spot of hunter-gathering at the best of times but when it comes to Christmas dinner, he's pulling out all the stops. To give the River Cottage crew a meal to warm the cockles, Hugh will be out in the countryside to shoot, harvest and gather the ingredients for his festive feast.
Making the team earn their supper, Hugh takes the good people of River Cottage HQ out for a day of squid fishing and serves up a lip-smacking seafood dish to the hungry hunters.
For the centrepiece of his medieval banquet, Hugh's planning a meat feast to make the table groan. Stuff the turkey, at River Cottage they'll be tucking into a gluttonous ten-bird roast comprising (take a deep breath) a woodcock in a partridge in a pigeon in a pheasant in a guineafowl in a mallard in a chicken in an Aylesbury duck in a goose in a turkey.
And if that doesn't get the diners reaching for the Gaviscon, there's some sausage baubles on the Christmas tree, fresh from Hugh's home-made smokery.
To round off the opulent offering, there's medieval bread, spicy gingerbread and a hearty offering of pickles, preserves and puddings. Wash it all down with Hugh's potent home-brewed Christmas cider, and it sounds like Hugh's got himself a party.
Let the feasting commence.
