Just outside New York City, in sleepy Bellemore, Gordon met the struggling staff of the Mixing Bowl Eatery.
This desperate diner was once a thriving business, but customers began to leave the joint and not even a mammoth collection of special offer signs could lure them back. When Gordon arrived, the Bowl was empty.
Front of house was run by manager, Mike, who was either screaming like a banshee, botching bookings or taking a fat cut of the waiting staff's tips.
Chef-owner Billy was hiding his mild manners in the kitchen, to the dismay of wife, Lisa, who was so distraught at the state of their affairs, she was ready to cut her losses and close the restaurant down.
Seeing a gap in the market for a healthy food eatery in the neighbourhood, Gordon overhauled the menu and reignited Billy's passion for cooking. The struggling restaurant had just six weeks left before financial pressure would close them down. Did Gordon do enough?
