Tucked in Tukahoe, a commuter town outside Manhatten, Gordon found the Olde Stone Mill - a beautiful building hiding some ugly accounts.
Deluded owner, Dean, was convinced he was the main man, despite $500,000 of debt. "I don't believe there's a better operator or restaurateur than me," he boasted.
In the kitchen, chef, Mike, had lost his passion for food. And, having witnessed the bizarre cones of salad the kitchen dished up, Gordon was not surprised.
Tempers flared between Gordon and Dean, and the pair got locked into a fiery exchange when Gordon insisted Dean spent less time hassling the diners as they tried to eat.
"When customers are in my restaurants, I don't grovel round their tables to ask if they like it," explains Gordon.
"No, you probably pay 10 people to do that," snapped Dean.
Despite the battles, Dean agreed to Gordon's idea to relaunch the restaurant as a steakhouse with not a salad cone in sight.
