In Ramsay's Great British Nightmare, Gordon Ramsay will be campaigning for viewers to start patronising local restaurants

With a global, multi-million pound, restaurant empire and a constellation of Michelin stars under his belt, Gordon knows a thing or two about running a successful commercial kitchen. But other eateries are not so fortunate and, all too often, ambitious dreams turn to kitchen nightmares as the practicalities of getting punters in and keeping them loyal, prove too difficult to pull off.

Gordon's brought his own brand of tough love to failing kitchens on both side of the Atlantic and tried to turn the fortunes of dozens of restaurants, from curry houses to soul-food shacks, by changing the way they're managed.

This time it's the diners he's reaching out to, encouraging the man on the street to put his money where his hungry mouth is.

He will also be passing on tips to restaurant owners on how best to cope with the credit crunch.

Watch Ramsay's Great British Nightmare, coming to Channel 4, Friday, 30th January, 9pm.

  5. I love gorden, i think he's great. He only gets heavy if they deserve it! and i certainly would'nt eat at most of the sxxx holes he goes to, would you. Gorden is a great chef, and if they can't hack the criticism! then they should not be chefs.I know he comes across heavy at times, and can be quite rude, but credit where its due, when he has finally got through to them he does praise the good work. Well done gorden. I think your great, love the show too.

  12. There were two Belle & Sebastian songs sampled. The first is "Expectations" (while customers at the Okehampton bistro are complaining about the long wait, roughly 1/4 in to the show) and the other is "She's Losing It" (near the end when Silversmiths is having its pie night). Both are from the Tigermilk album. Thanks for identifying the Penguin Cafe Orchestra tune, it's been in my head for months.

  15. I'll listed to those songs by Penguin Cafe Orchestra as I am intrigued now.. if not I 'll find the number on the catch up that relates to the song I am looking for and see if anyone knows. I think its a well known indie tune. Sounds obsessive but once a tune is in your head it drives you so mad if its familiar but you can't work out what it is!

  18. To Kayleigh21, The song I think you may mean is Perpetuum Mobile by Penguin Cafe Orchestra; from the Signs of Life album. It was used in an ad campaign recently(ish) not sure what for though - which doesn't say much for their campaign. It's 108 mins on the catch up though, so you may be talking about something else. In case you're interested there was another PCO track earlier in the prog called The Ecstasy of Dancing Fleas, from the self titled album, 39 on catch up. The song just before Perpetuum Mobile is Funk Soul Brother by Fat boy slim, I think - if that's any help to anyone! Happy searching.

  19. There has been a bit of talk about songs - but there was one song where they just played the instrumental part (popular indie hit, jangly guitar) and its been driving me nuts. Its definitely not Ceremony by New Order... It sounded more like something by the Kooks or Oasis.. very upbeat. Any ideas?

  31. In all honesty, Gordon Ramsey cannot claim that he makes it a rule to avoid restaurants that give out fliers, when he himself has pulled out that trick from the hat on at least two of his own shows... A bit hypocritical, to say the least. Either way, I haven't watched the whole episode yet, and will probably make a few more comments, after I'm done. (I'm watching it as I write!)

  32. I know a great pub called The Junction Inn which is located in Groombridge in Tunbridge Wells. They serve freshly prepared, locally sourced produce and have an excellent chef. They too are up against all the big high street chains in town and are struggling to pull in customers at the moment, but I will definitely be going back there!

I can understand Gordon losing his cool but the advice he was desperately tring to give made good business sense. The response he received from the 2 guys just about represents the head in the sand attitude from many high ranking people in organisations. GREAT BUSINESS SENSE KEEP IT UP

  51. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the food programmes past couple of weeks. Gordons has raised a good point, support your local restaurant! There is a restaurant in Chorlton Manchester called Marmalade which is all locally sourced food. I went in a couple of weeks ago in a party of 10, we all got different meals and we all cleaned our plates, only stopped at licking it! It was averagelly priced, but didn't mind it not being cheap, with the knowledge it was all local and fresh. www.mymarmalade.co.uk

  61. Evening all! The great British food fight is upon us all! Firstly congratulations to Heston Blumenthal for an excellent three part series. Jay Rayner continued with a brilliant Dispatches episode investigating the cheap food. I have read alot of the opinions about what is Gordon doing not researching the areas of food himself! Truth is during the times of recession and the awful credit crunch 30 resteraunts are shutting in their first year, and not this is more likely to double! I would love to see Jamie and Hugh get off their bums and save a resteraunt but at the end of the day they decide to talk about food which is not (apart from hugh putting his money where his mouth is) hard! Fair paly Gordon put your reputation on the line like Heston and like always pull it off!!

  63. Stumpy Frog, I wonder why you think the campaigns of Hugh and Jamie are of superior importance? I agree, they highlight things that may concern some people on a 'moral' level, although clearly not that many as the products still sell. Do they seriously offer a suitable and realistic solution to what they percieve as problems? It may be of interest for you and them to research the psychology behind food selection with reference to why certain animals are seen as acceptable to eat and others aren't etc. it can be very interesting.

  64. Leave Gordon be, I like his shows and he is tackling a different side of the food industry. To me, ensuring people are serving good food in a clean environment, which in turn makes people more passionate about food, is just as good a cause as what Hugh and Jamie are doing.
