Neil Morrissey returns to our screens, this time as a would-be brewer behaving badly.

Men Behaving Badly star, Neil Morrissey, and his best mate, chef Richard Fox, have a dream: to open up their own pub and micro-brewery, produce their own beer and then get it into every supermarket in the country. There's just one problem: neither of them has ever brewed a drop of ale in their lives.

Risky Business

Smoke gets in their eyes

The ultimate pub crawl

This new series on Channel 4 follows these two likely lads over six months as they try to make their pipe-dream a reality.

In this first episode, Neil and Richard try to find the perfect pub, brew up their first beer and put their home-brew to the test. With their own money and their personal reputations at stake, the boys soon find that creating a successful business is harder than it looks. Is it a case of Men Brewing Badly?

  1. Re Neil Morrissey Risky Business series I hope the Channel 4 Crew will be going back to the pub now thay have decided to close, and film the closure proceedure, hopefully paying all outstandind debts, as i am sure Morrissey can affford to do this from his more succesful acting career [albeit as bob the builder] . After all it was known to be a "Risky Business" but they chose to pursue this venture dispite the warnings.

  2. Men Brewing Badly what a great name for your business. Maybe franchise it worldwide, and I'll be interested for Australia, the great Ozzie male dream, great food, sport and great beer, everybody is welcome> see you guys in Adelaide, I met Richard there and unfortunately didn't partake in the eloquent surroundings of the esteemed "Crazy Horse" night out, no free pass, but sorted this time around. Good Luck, I will be looking out for the show on Channel 4.

  3. A really enjoyable programme and well done Neil and Richard. I bought a bottle of blonde ale from Tesco's in Selby for my son, haven't heard the verdict yet. The pub is the Punch Bown Inn at Marton cum Grafton north of York for anyone wanting to know.

  4. Ben - They do say in the show that their beer is being brewed on licence by a commercial brewery. You didn't seriously believe that they could produce half a million bottles a year for Tescos out of a converted garage in Yorkshire did you? Interesting show. Not tasted the prodcut yet though. It does rather seem like its got onto the supermarket shelves by virtue of having the promotion of the programme behind it, but I guess the proof of the pudding will be in the drinking and in the sales volume through the supermarkets. In the end those guys aren't going to stock it just for fun and if its still there in 12 months time I guess that have got it right.

  5. Having watched a superb tv show, (risky business). I thought I would try Tesco for my chance to sample the Morrissey Fox pint. After waiting 8 weeks for them to get new stock I finally purchased 4 bottles. Took them home and anticipated a decent night. Having poured the first glass I went for that first taste, ahhhhhhhhhhhh why has someone filled a bottle with flat shandy? sure that it must be the bottle at fault I tried another, Its the same each time, my fault for not knowing that blonde beer tastes of flat shandy. Anyway, good tv show and I will be watching to see if they can produce something new which tastes of beer.

  7. A good friend of mine (who has his own successful brewery) was at a beer expo a couple of months back and got the rep for Morrissey's beer to admit that it's brewed on license (it escapes me exactly where). Are we seriously meant to believe that these two could produce that much product, at a consistent quality to the standards of the supermarkets from their 'microbrewery'??! If they said in the program that part/all of it was brewed on license I wouldn't mind, but the fact they make out like they do it all seriously annoys me! How many people are going to give brewing a go now after these two muppets bumbling their way through. Some people could loose some serious cash!

  13. Whats the point of telling us we have 4000 characters if the comment is then going to be totally edited down. My previous comment now makes no sense whatsoever and just looks like the ramblings of a drunken Brummie. I hear from a 'rich' friend of mine that the pub is OK but he visited shortly after it opened. My recommendation - if you want good food at a good price, try the Grantham Arms in nearby Boroughbridge. The Sunday carvery is particularly good value. Not owned by a celebrity, but the son of one (Leeds United legend Peter Lorimer).

  15. I haven't seen the latest episode yet but I was disappointed that in the previous episode the beer was tested on two groups of men with no women involved. I am a keen real ale drinker like my mother before me, it's not a purely masculine pastime. Infact most of my boyfriends have been either lager drinkers or non discerning bitter drinkers and I have introduced them to real ale. So come on Neil Morrisey, realise that there are women who have an opinion on ale too!

  16. Just to update the blog... The Punch Bowl has now reportably been sold to Croptons brewery!!! So much for taking £15,000 a week! On good authority and being a marton-cum-grafton resident I have been told the pub is now only taking £6,000 per week... No wonder they are having to sell!!!! Thank god... perhaps somebody who knows how to run a pub will take it on and transform it back to a pub now a rather poor copy of other good local public houses.

  19. What a shame!- they have turned a pub selling food into a wine bar/ resaurant selling overpriced beer. Exactly the opposite of what they told the locals. Can't see it lasting long- the leaseholder is right to be worried- do they know anything about market research into wahat they were planning- in fact was there a plan at all, other than supplying themselves with beer? 20. Last night's finale made for some good old 'shout at the telly' viewing. Unbelievable levels of arrogance and unawareness. My friend and and I were so incensed we were on the verge of planning a weekend roadtrip up to their ridiculous establishment so we could show some support for the locals. Down with this sort of thing. Careful now.

  21. Well, being born and raised a Brummie and latterly becoming an expat of Staffordshire I now live about a mile from The Punch Bowl. It's not often I come across people of similar origins in these parts (I know Neil was born in Stoke, but it's close enough), so it would be nice if he was to invite me down for a pint, he must have inadventantly missed me off the opening night invite. I was also wondering what made him decide on a little Yorkshire village for this project. I can claim to having turned the Christmas lights on in Birmingham in 1972 (I was 6 years old and had won a colouring competition). The story even made the local evening news on TV. So come on Neil, drop me an email and I'll give this beer of yours a try.

  22. Fantastic enthusiasm lads! Can't wait to try the 'blonde' when it hits Tesco's. The recipe sounds like its close to Tim Taylor Landlord which is one of my favourites and also uses Styrrian Goldings. But half a million bottle contract a year from Tesco is well over 100 casks a week, wow thats alot of beer. Best wishes, Dave.

  24. Guys...hugely disappointed at your arrogance to suggest your 'service' etc etc etc could possibly worth and extra 60p on a single pint of relatively standard bitter available at £0.90 pence can.. You have taken a real piece of England, supported by local people, and coverted it to 'modern' faceless event. I was right behind you in every episode based on the promises you made about a pub serving food but have been left wholly disappointed. You should have been reducing the cost of the beer to re-instate community and encourage local people to congregate at the heart of the community, not driving them away. Business is business but England is England and you have put yourselves ahead of our great nation....Rant Over !!!

  34. I'm sorry Peter, I'm loving the 15 year old school boy banter from these two! I think its what makes the program. I am a 36 year old female, from Northumberland...and I dont drink pints, although this program has made me want to travel down to the Punch bowl and give their 'real' beer a taste! Obviously, you are from the area in which the they bought the pub and sounds like to me maybe your a bit upset that the pub has been taken over. Which is understandable as no one likes change...but, the way industry (pubs) is at the moment, thousands of pubs/bars are closing down...I think its great and probably saved the skin of The Punch Bowl itself...being up for closure in the future. They have updated it..it looked like it needed a slight make over without being over the top, which is exactly what they did! So..Neil & Richard..if your reading this...I will be happy to travel down and try out your beer! If you can get my details...fee free to emil me and I will forward it to my friends! :0)

  35. Unbelievable. That is all you can say to this program. Neil & Richard appear as uneducated, foul mouthed 15 year old schoolboys rather than professinoal business people that a modern publican has to be. Thank god for The Tiger Inn as it is only down the road from the Punch Bowl and at least serves beer that is drinkable.

  37. Can I take this opportunity to say hello to Repton, obviously a fellow cynic. (Synic; which I spelt incorrectly in my first post, sorry) but I was under the influence of a couple of bottles of Old Peculiar and couldn't spell straight. Notwithstanding, has anyone noticed that when anyone types an "apostrophe", as in inverted comma, it comes out as "'"? No big deal, just drawing to the attention of the web master. Let us see if it happens again; ''''

  38. A very interesting programme, though I think, not all it appears to be. I was not sure what I had seen in the original viewing so I watched it again on "catch up". At about 24 minutes in I was right, Neil and Richard had a tasting of their fermented wort. It appeared in the glass just as it should, clear but flat and they were very pleased with the outcome. Next scene: their glasses were half filled with beer which had a very good head on it, just the sort of head you would get from bottled beer. They continued to enthuse over their new beer. My questions are, 1) Where did the head come from, because it certainly was not from their barrel? 2) Which beer was used for the public tastings? I await future episodes. A spokesman will probably say it was for continuity purposes as they could not afford to use all of Neil and Richard's brew on out-takes (for which Neil is famous). Call me an old synic but some people do leave themselves wide open.

  42. sycophantic approach to every occupant of the village by morrissey. He promised to leave us with a traditional pub,£85 per head new year meals? Beer brewed externally by professionals and imported The pub,now an area avoided by locals. Smoke, mirrors and bull****, numerous staff leaving overnight? Not many happy bunnies in Marton cum Grafton. Local pubs are having the best of times of since the Punch Bowl revamp Try a review addition to your programme, it would be more realistic.
