When Jamie vowed to do all he could to save British bacon, we're not sure he had pig masturbation in mind. But adamant we see the whole process of pork production Jamie joins pig breeding expert, Jonathan Bradley, as he extracts some sperm from a boar.
"He's quite settled now," says Jonathan when the pig's work is done. "I bet he is," says a bemused Jamie, a little dazed. Just one pot of the boar's semen contains 200 billion sperm.
From one extreme to the other Jamie shows us a video of a piglet being castrated. Many people believe failing to castrate a piglet will affect the taste of the meat once the pig has matured. While no longer the norm in Britain, Jamie quizzes Anne from Danish Crown as to why it's still happening in Denmark. "We export 90 per cent of what we do and last time we tried to stop castration we simply had a no go from countries like Germany saying 'we're not going to eat it'. This is a matter of farmers' survival," she explains.
